In the year 1502, a court estate – the later Landgasthof Bären – was first mentioned in documents. However, the history of the farming village Zarten is about 1,600 years older. When the Egyptian geographer Ptolemy wrote his standard work on the then known world, he named 150 BC. Chr. In the Dreisamtal located celtic settlement “Tarodunum”. From this name later derived the Roman “Zarduna”, today’s delicate.

The uninterrupted history of the innkeeper family Steinhart and the “Bear” began with Bartholomäus Steinhart, born around 1595. Today, Thomas Steinhart – in direct succession and after more than 400 years of history – is the eleventh bear farmer.

Bartt Ulrich, the first detectable owner on the bear is from 1608/09 in the local baptism book as “Hospes”, ie as a host, expelled.

Zarten, where the “Bären” is centrally located, is one of the oldest settlements in the Breisgau region. The village lies on the Dreisam River (Celtic name) in the so-called Zarten Basin, which forms a “bay” in front of Freiburg.
